Hidden Lake by RyanBuchanan
It was a long week out in Glacier National Park, dodging fires, escaping the smoke and hunting for clouds—tough even finding flowing water and flowers. With apparently just 15% of snowfall this past winter, drought conditions were in full effect—flowers were long gone for the most part and creek beds were nearly dry. This evening though, we were able to get out from most of the smokey haze and catch some nice, interesting light up at Logan Pass. This is Hidden Lake at the foot of Bearhat Mountain. The search for foreground life led me to this spot where I was able to get a slight sideview angle on the mountain and some greater depth out to the horizon. Blended around 6 shots to get sharpness throughout. With Going to the Sun road closed I was worried we weren’t going to be able to make it up here. Was incredible to finally see it—a photographer’s dream. But the real treat was finally getting out to shoot with Ryan Dyar and Miles Morgan. We had a blast and it was obviously great to get to know and learn from these two pros. After the summer pause i am back with a new image a bit different from my classical images, is a seascape taken in the beautiful Canary Islands. The black vulcanic rocks and the striking colors of the sunset reminded me a primordial place whenthe world was dominated by the forces of nature. Deep Chill by ACWaddington
I photographed this ice cave on the Torre Glacier in Los Glaciers National Park Argentina. The glacier has shrunk some 150 metres since the end of 2012. I shot this on a scouting trip and decided to return a few days later, it was amazing to notice that even in such a short space of time part of the arch had collapsed. Rappelling into the cave was a worrying but exhilarating experience. If you like this image please look at my Amber Room shot adjacent to this one. The Smoking Room by RyanDyar
Smoke from the surrounding wildfires during my two week trip to Glacier NP made itself VERY well known. All day long it was there like some loud drunk frat-dude saying "look at me! I'm here to screw up your good time, bro!" Fortunately, we were able to use the smoke to our advantage a few times. The smoke can do interesting things to the atmosphere and light color, so not all hope was lost. The haziness in this particular shot was from the fires hundreds of miles away in Washington state... it made the trip across two states to try to screw up my party, but I think I made it work still. Not the most original image ever taken, and a bit predictable for sure... but whatever, I dig it. Anyways, one of the tours I'm leading in Norway with my good friends Arild and Stian is almost filled, so if you are interested in that trip, now is the time to check it out! I'm willing to bet this trip to the Arctic will be even more productive than our last. I can't wait! Also, I just released a new post-processing instructional video a few days back. It's packed with some unique techniques and theories about processing you may not find anywhere else. People seem to really be enjoying the videos and have had nothing but great things to say, so I *think* they are helping people... it's been awesome to see the many before/after shots people have been emailing me. Be sure to check the videos out if you are into that sort of thing.
