The call of the starfish too strong for me to leave and head towards these karsts, this was as far as wanted to go while waiting for the backlighted scene behind me to soften a bit more. I guess you can only make a plan and hope everything sticks... which is very rare no matter how often you visit a location.

Awestruck.....again... by OleHenrikSkjelstad Add me http://ift.tt/1fqSViy

I got some really weird clouds some evenings ago at my favorite lake. Only the lower parts of the clouds that were hovering above the hills took on color from the descending sun. It was around 11 pm. I was done editing the image this night and didn't think much of it. But, I posted it on one of the landscape groups on Facebook and to my surprise it has been well received. I am truly hopeless at assessing my own images. The base is actually a 5 frame hdr. Hand-blending a tree against a sky always drives me nuts. Took out a default (bland, boring, dull) version from Nik's hdr software. Massaged the output in Lightroom as if it was a raw file before the image was loaded into Photoshop. In Ps I have masked in various Nik and Topaz filters, done some midtones work, dodging and burning, masked in a high value of the high pass filter into the sky to increase contrast, added a modest Orton texture, some color work - mostly warming and taking down the blues and removing some magenta color cast.....and etc etc. A couple of hours of PP work.

Mabry Mill, Blue Ridge Parkway (Infrared) by KenLane Add me http://ift.tt/1fqSViy

Mabry Mill is a watermill located at milepost 176.2 of Blue Ridge Parkway in Floyd County, Virginia. It is a tourist attraction mainly for the picturesque views of the mill itself. A short trail around the mill connects historical exhibits about life in rural Virginia. The trail allows visitors to view the gristmill, sawmill, and blacksmith shop. Mabry Mill was built by Edwin Boston Mabry (E.B. Mabry). E.B. Mabry returned to Floyd County in 1903 and began the construction of the mill. It was first a blacksmith and wheelwright shop, then became a sawmill. By 1905 it was in operation as a gristmill. By 1910 the front part of the mill was completed and included a lathe for turning out wheel hubs, a tongue and groove lathe, a planer and a jig-saw. Between 1905 and 1914 E.B. Mabry bought adjacent tracts of land, mostly for the purpose of acquiring more water power. 1 During peak seasons, demonstrations of crafts are given by National Park Service volunteers at Mabry Mill.

Almost on fire by DennisBerggren Add me http://ift.tt/1fqSViy

A very special and strange light this evening. Half of the sky was really dark while the other half was glowing in a wondeful red and orange tone. I like how the long exposure almost makes it look like the sky is on fire.

Are you sick of this view yet? While I know it's a popular one, it just amazes me every time I see it. After sticking out sunset, I debated heading back right after, or sticking around longer to catch the milky way rising above. The choice was easy, and I stayed put and waited for the skies to turn dark, and boy does it get dark out here! As the light fell to dark, I watched as lights moved throughout the landscape. There were hikers, climbers, etc all scattered throughout this scene and it was pretty interesting to see some climbers and hikers way out on half dome as their lights flashed on and off. The silence was only broken by the sound of Vernal and Nevada falls, yet, was still a deafening silence. At this point I was all alone and was constantly looking around shining the headlamp in various directions hoping that a bear wasn't coming to share the view. Luckily, no bears, and after the milky way got too high, I packed up and made the almost four hour drive back across to mono lake to catch the milky way once again before sunrise. Non stop shooting for almost 30 straight hours! Hope you enjoy! P.S. It's Yosemite's 150th birthday today, so I figured posting this shot would be appropriate

Out of all the groves and trails that we visited, Boy Scout trail was my favorite by far. It was like being in the Jurassic, amongst ferns that, in some instances were as tall as my shoulders. And then there's those amazing redwood trees! A really humbling experience to be standing next to a living organism that is 10 times older than me, or even older. Thank you for looking!
