Starburst Snowflake by donkom

Yesterday we had a fair amount of snow, but only for a brief moment were the snowflakes beautiful and photograph-worthy. One of these snowflakes stood out from the rest, and it's today's image. Please please view large! This snowflake is something of a rarity - a very symmetrical design that persists through multiple growth patterns. With layers of symmetry and no broken pieces, it's easy to find beauty in this image. I consider this to be one of the classic snowflakes I would have imagined... but the natural details are endless. The symmetry disappears in the details, which makes it even more interesting to me. With a few smaller crystal adornments, this tiny collage is one of my favourites this year. 40 frames in total were used to focus-stack this image and get sharpness from tip to tip. It was more difficult than most because the snowflake was melting during the shoot and combining the multiple images required more attention than usual. It was well worth it, though! I can still ship my new snowflake book in time for Christmas if people want to get one, check that out at http://bit.ly/1cgodEx . via 500px
