More stave church captures: Heddal I, Heddal III and Borgund I. - Stave church of Heddal nearby Notodden (Norway), built approx. 1250 (according to the church information) , called the 'wooden cathedral'. The tar they put every seven years on the wooden parts (outside). After tarring the church the whole building is quite black, like a dark mystical building. The church shown wasn't tarred a few years, hences is looking rather wooden. On my pictures of the stave church in Borgund you can see the church almost entirely covered with black tar. Some years later it looks like you can see here. This church is now a spiritual gathering place for nearly 800 years. still in use as a church for the local people and weddings during the summer time. via 500px
